Who is Adventures in Tri-ing?

Welcome to Adventures in Tri-ing.  My name is Courtney, I’m 33 years old, I live in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago, and I’m a Gemini.  (LOL!)

That is me in the red cap in the header on my blog during my first sprint triathlon.

I’m originally from the Green Bay, Wisconsin area, and yes, I’m a PACKER FAN!!

Here is my story:

I have enjoyed sports and fitness off and on for most of my life.  My whole family (mom, dad and brother) are athletic and enjoy sports and being active.  I have gone through periods of my life where I was VERY in shape, thin, fat, out of shape, gym bunny, not stepping foot in a gym.

November 2008 I got serious about my re-commitment to fitness and started seeing a personal trainer named Lisa at her studio Fitness Together.  With her help, I started getting back in shape and fell in love with strength training.  I love strength training and all it does for my body.

I had been working at the VP of Human Resources for a mortgage company at the time.  I had been in the corporate world since I graduated college, I was in the rat race! I commuted around 2 hours a day, I had a Blackberry I never put down, and I was stressed and worn out.

The company I worked for closed down in February of 2009 and suddenly I was adrift.  I tried to start my own business, but it didn’t take off.  I was trying to find my way in a world that suddenly was very different.  I had always had a life plan, or so I thought.  The one constant through all of this was exercise.  It was an anxiety reliever and a way for me to feel great.  I decided to make a few goals, one was to complete my first sprint triathlon and I started this blog to document that.  I also decided to become a personal trainer.  Why not?!

I completed the Lake Carroll Sprint Triathlon on September 27, 2009.

In October 2009 I took and passed my ACE personal training certification. I currently train some private clients, work at my gym as a Fitness Floor staff member and hope to transition to a personal trainer position soon.  I also have recently picked up a gig teaching some boot camps.

I am currently studying for my next ACE (American Council on Exercise) certification exam: Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant.

I am also training for my first half marathon in May 2010.  I plan to continue doing triathlons along with improving my 5k and 5 mile times.  I want to continue living my life in a healthy and balanced way and passing along that knowledge to clients.  I think exercise is such a tonic for whatever ails you, and I hope that I can help others achieve this feeling as well!

I have 2 dogs that you will see a lot on the blog.  Georgie is a 6 year old border collie mix and Prince is a 5 year old golden retriever.

You are inspiring us to stay in shape and train for the BIG walkathon September 12 in Barrington. Does playing 18 holes of golf qualify for training exercise? Corinne

Hi Courtney! Good luck on the tri, I am doing my first sprint this September as well. I could use some tips from your blog – eating properly is DEFINITELY the hardest part! Hope to see you soon, tell JR I said hi.

Jason, can’t wait to hear about your tri experiences. So exciting! But nerve-wracking! By the way I loved the video on Facebook of your son with you doing the finger motorboat in his mouth…freaking hilarious!!!

Neat blog! I’m new follower, also from the vicinity of the city! Except I unfortunately live in a notso nice south burb.

I don’t do triathlons, nor do I run much. I’m a walker! Maybe you could motivate me into running a bit more? 🙂

Hey Ashley! Welcome! I’m out in the northern burbs, I swear it is always colder out here!!!!
My best advice for running is to start slow so you don’t get frustrated. I use the run 3 min/walk 2 min technique still in my training. Start with running for 1 minute, walking for 4. Then just continue to reduce your walking time and increasing your walking time.
Keep me updated with your progress!

Hey Courtney! I just stumbled across your blog and wanted to say hi! I can relate to so much of your “about me”….the corporate job, the long commute, and the passion for health and fitness! I’ll be interested to follow along as you pursue your new career and train for your tri!! Good luck 🙂

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I wanted to check yours out – and it seems like we have a lot in common – I’m a Packer fan too. 🙂 Best of luck in the future and congratulations on your success! Maybe I’ll run into you at a Milwaukee/Chicago area triathlon. 🙂

Hi Courtney! I’ve seen you comment on other blogs before and wanted to stop by. I LOVE your blog and think it’s awesome that you did a tri! The swimming part always intimidates me! I’m running in my first half marathon come May and I’m really excited (and slightly terrified). Congrats on all your successes!
