White knuckle weather

December 9, 2009

Wow, it is SNOWY here in the midwest!  I had to drive home at 11:00 PM last night and it was not pretty.  It started with my car being stuck in the parking lot at work..luckily one of the guys who worked there was able to push me out.

Then I “white knuckled” it the whole way home.  There was a lot of snow and ice on the roads, but luckily since it was 11 PM I didn’t have to to deal with too many other drivers.  UGH! That was not fun.  I do not miss my super long commute now that it is winter, that is for sure.  Last night was only 9 miles, but took me over 30 minutes.

EXERCISE

I did a kick butt workout yesterday here in the basement.  I am actually pretty sore today, and that is rare.

I started on the treadmill for 10 minutes.  For 30 seconds I walked forward, then for 30 seconds I galloped sideways to the right, walked forward 30 seconds, galloped sideways to the left for 30 seconds and repeated for 10 minutes.  This is a great way to shakeup your treadmill routine and I am FEELING it today! After I did this for 10 minutes, I jumped off the treadmill and did this strength routine:

(8 lb dumbbells and 15 lb kettelbell)

I did these moves quickly, no rest in between.

Pushups x 12

Deadlifts with kettlebell x 12

Hammer curls with dumbbells x 12

Shoulder press with dumbbells x 12

Overhead tricep extension with dumbbell x 12

Bent over dumbbell flyes x 12

Side lunges holding dumbbells x 12 each leg

Front lunges holding dumbbells x 12 each leg

Lateral raises with dumbbells x 12

Squats with kettlebell swings x 12

Reverse crunches x 15

I repeated the side galloping intervals and this strength routine a total of 3 times.

TRAINING STATS

30 minutes total on treadmill, 1.5 miles

65 minutes total workout

516 calories

138 average HR

168 max HR

What a great workout!!

Right now I’m looking out past my Christmas tree to the snow in the front.

Sipping on my FAVORITE treat this time of year that my mom brought down for me Monday, peppermint coffee!!!! Freshly ground the beans and I’m slurping up every last drop in my Let It Snow mug.

I see some shoveling, Biggest Loser on DVR, baking and housecleaning in my future this morning.

I leave you with some cute puppy pics….they are loving the snow, they romp and eat the snow like puppies!

I’m carless now that I live in DC but I remember how horrible it used to be to drive in bad snow!! Glad you made it home safely. Be careful out there!!

Congrats on the great workout! I need to find a way to get one in today – but I’m not sure I want to go out into the snow! 🙂

That is an awesome workout! This may be silly, but what speed to you set the treadmill at for that workout? Sometimes I’ll flip around and walk my cool down “backward” on the treadmill to stretch out my legs…but I usually press pause and get back on!

I love peppermint coffee as well!!

I originally set the treadmill at 3.0 MPH to get used to the sideways motion, then I steadily increased it by the end to 3.5 MPH.

BUT, I also put the incline up at the same time, making the workout even harder!! It was awesome.

I’m feeling it today in my legs!

OMG, you drive just like me! If I could only grab the steering wheel tighter, I would!

You just reminded me that I stashed away peppermint coffee in my deep freeze from last year!!

Looks like a coffee drink is in my near future!

We never lived anywhere with real snow, but I love to see dogs on the first cool day of the year. It’s like they’ve lost their minds and they all become puppies again. Yay for cool weather.

Awesome workout! I’ve been fairly active, but not nearly enough lately. Definitely need to get to the gym this week.

Ugh, your drive sounds awful, though. 😦 Driving on ice is scary. Glad you made it home okay!
