My Sprint Triathlon Goals

September 25, 2009

On Sunday I am participating in my first sprint triathlon.  The race distances are .5 mile swim, 12.4 mile bike, 3.1 mile run.  I started this blog 3 months ago as a way of tracking my training and holding myself accountable.  Over a year ago I signed up to do another triathlon and never did it.  I never trained, I just didn’t show up.  And that is one of the things I was most disappointed in myself in a long time.

I made a new goal this summer.  I am unemployed, working to get in the fitness industry, now is the time to do it!  No excuses!  So I started training.  I ran (and trained for some other races at the same time).  I swam at an outdoor pool near me and then when that closed I joined a gym with a pool.  I borrowed a road bike from a good pal (thanks Jen!!) and fell in love with biking.

I can only hope I have trained enough to get me through the event.  We were recently sent an email from the race organizers indicating the water on race day will be around mid-60’s.  EEK!! Luckily, my friend Kim who is participating in the Olympic relay at the same triathlon offered to lend me a wetsuit.  I have not been training in a wetsuit, I’m not even sure it will fit, but I’m hoping it will help.

GOAL

My goal for this event is merely to finish.  I have never done a triathlon before, so any time I set will be my personal record and give me a time to beat in the future.  I do want to finish it in 2 hours or less though.  I should be able to reach that goal based on my times for the events in my training.  However, I don’t know how long the transitions will take, that is not taking into account any weird things happening out on the course, etc.

Thanks to all who have supported me while I set out on this journey! Those that gave me advice, lended me gear, trained with me, read my blog and commented, etc.  My husband has been great about encouraging and tells me every day that I can do this!

There’s me in the middle!!! HA!!!

I have all day to clean the house, do laundry, and finish all my packing and as soon as my husband gets home from work we are on our way to the event!  I will probably have one more blog entry tonight…please make sure to check back Sunday night for the full race recap!

Good Luck! I recently finished my first tri a month ago and my husband has his next week. It will all be worth it when you finally cross that finish line. Remember..you are only doing this for yourself – so don’t let anyone’s pace mess you up! Enjoy it!

Thank you so much! That is good advice to just focus on myself…only have myself to compete against!
